Seventh session of the Feminist Book Club in Booksa, Zagreb

Bernardine Evaristo: Girl, Woman, Other, 2019.

11. 4. 2024.

At the April meeting of the Feminist Book Club, we discussed the novel Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo (2019), winner of the Booker Prize, which was also showered with praise by local critics. While reading the novel, we addressed some of the questions about the relationship between literature and politics and the current literary scene that have been on our minds for months.

This collage of stories about a series of interconnected characters opened up discussion on numerous topics, some of which stand out: the relationship between art and political sensibility, strategies of social protest, intergenerational changes in family dynamics, the social inclusion of art, intergenerational views on feminism, the image of Europe on the eve of Brexit, exclusivity and dominance in marginalized groups, intergenerational changes in the understanding of female independence, the role of social and artistic critique along with democratization through social networks, the problematic link between autobiography and engaged art, and the strategies employed to free these themes from unambiguous interpretations thanks to the novel's complex structure, plot, style and humor.
