The Feminist Book Club 2/5

Caponeu event

13.02.2025

The fifth session of the Feminist Book Club in Booksa, Zagreb (Season 2)

Ursula Le Guin - Ljudi bez ičega (The Dispossessed, 1974)

Ursula Le Guin is an American writer, author of novels, short stories, children's books, poetry and essays that have been translated into more than 40 languages, winner of numerous awards and highly influential, especially in the science fiction genre. The first edition of the novel was subtitled An Ambiguous Utopia, but the work is often interpreted using the genre term utopia.

At the meeting we discussed the structure of the novel and the strategies used to depict social relations, as well as constants such as the critique of money, religion and gender relations. We looked at the treatment of work, motivation, common good, solidarity, community, individuality and creativity that the novel discusses through the parallel representation of different social orders, with a discussion of the current social context. Finally, we dedicated part of the conversation to the determinant of ambiguous utopia and the possibility of utopian thinking in contemporary society.
